Why did you become a recruiter?
That’s a funny story. As a Sales Manager particularly, I hated recruiters – with a passion. They regularly called me when I didn’t have a job (to meet their activity KPIs) and when I did have a job, most of the time they ignored the brief I gave them and sent lots of CVs of candidates that didn’t fit the profile I was looking for. The only recruiter I ended up using was John Evans at EvansPetersen, even though by that stage he was based interstate. At least he knew his stuff and had worked the Sydney market previously.
When I decided it was time to start looking for a new job, I called John to find out what Pharma Marketing Roles he had. He suggested I might like to try my hand at recruitment and head up the Sydney office, which I though was a great joke. I remember saying to him – “I’m looking for a real job!”. Over the next few months he suggested it several times and eventually I decided to give it a try. I promised him 12 months. That was almost 8 years ago and here I still am – AND I love it! Who would have thought…
What is your biggest piece of advice for job seekers?
Be realistic about the skill set and experience you offer to an employer and leverage those to ensure you are successful with the roles that you apply for. Think carefully about your short and long term career plan (if you have one) and make sure the roles/company you apply for marry with that.
What’s your secret talent no one knows about?
I used to be a good horse rider and worked on a ranch in the US breaking in & training horses.
Choose a movie title for the story of your life + why.
I often think by Friday it should be the ‘Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ as the week has been so crazy I’m feeling about 100 years old! At the moment, having had surgery it’s ‘My Left Foot’. I’d love it to be ‘Bend it Like Beckham’ but in reality it’s more like ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ – without the Greeks or the Wedding!
